Wales. It's stunning. It's under appreciated. It's a must see, must visit, must explore country.
I had not properly went to Wales until Tim took me on our first little holiday back in 2020. I did not know the absolute beauty that is Wales. It is stunning there and it has so many hidden gems! When we went to the Brecon Beacons it was all about the waterfalls. We visited so many and did the famous four falls trail! Never heard of the four falls trail? Read on to find out more...
Four falls trail (Sgwd falls)
This is a circular walk through what is known as 'waterfall country'. There is a carpark at the start of the walk. Each waterfall has it's own impressive traits. The second one has a rocky path down and back up, the third one offers a beautiful space to take a rest and the last one is quite possibly the best. At the last fall (Sgwd-yr-Eira) you can walk behind the fall itself, if you are feeling brave! There is a narrow, rocky and slippery path to get behind the fall but it is completely worth it! I suggest taking a good long break down at the fourth fall, because the 170 steps to get back up are an absolute killer...
Sgwd Clun-Gwyn is the first fall you will come across on this (roughly) 4 hour walk. It's quite a small fall, especially in comparison with the last one. However it features a lovely 'step' which breaks the fall up into two parts.

Next up is Sgwd Y Pannwr closely followed by Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gywn. Once down the descent, there is loads of space to take a seat on the river edge and rest your legs. The views between waterfalls are also worth appreciating, don't rush to each fall. Soak up the atmosphere and the views as you go.
And finally, at the bottom of those 170 steps we have Sgwd yr Eira. The biggest of the falls on this trail. As you descend the steps the waterfall becomes louder and louder. When you finally reach the bottom you are faced with the most stunning view.
There is again ample space to relax down there and take in the views. Once your legs have recovered I highly recommend taking the rocky, narrow and slippery path down the side to reach behind the fall. It is insanely loud, wet and cold but it is THE best experience.
Now comes the hardest part of this walk, well it was for me anyway. Tim practically sprinted up the 170 steps back to the top. I had to drag myself up the last 4 steps, couldn't catch my breath, legs shaking and everything. Luckily, some very kind people have placed 2 benches at the top of the steps so take your time to rest and recover there as it's quite a trek back to the car park. There are no waterfalls on the walk back but again the views are stunning!

Come rain or shine this is an absolutely brilliant walk and is a MUST DO if you are staying in or around the Brecon Beacons.
Blaen y Glyn
This walk offers two waterfalls, one at the top and one at the bottom. We parked in the top car park and nearly missed the first waterfall! It's very small and tucked away at the front of the car park.

We followed the route down (it's well sign posted), kept going, down a bit more and finally got to the bigger fall at the bottom. There is a car park closer to this fall, so you can park here and do the walk in reverse to how me and Tim did it. Completely up to you. On the way down there was a beautiful spot where we stopped, climbed over a fence and stood on top of a small cliff/waterfall. The views were breathtaking.
The further down the hill we got to louder Blaen y Glyn became. We rounded the corner and once again, the view was breathtaking.
Although not the biggest waterfall, the surrounding scenery adds a majestic vibe that words cannot explain. There are rocks placed not too far back from the fall, giving you a great place to rest, have your picnic and take in the view.
We rated this hike one of the easiest. They are all steep and a bit difficult in parts but this one posed the least difficulties.
Henrhyd falls
Now this. This is a waterfall hike. There is a small car park at the top and one way down. Absolutely not suitable for prams or small children. This was the steepest incline hike we did, getting back from this fall burnt my thigh muscles and pushed my body to the limit. HOWEVER, it was the shortest and quickest hike. So although it was very steep, it was over a lot sooner than the other hikes we did.
Henrhyd is a decent sized waterfall. There is a viewing platform quite a way back so you can take in all it's glory. There is also a thin path that edges around the waterfall and leads behind it so you can fully immerse yourself into the scenery. When me and Tim got there we was the only ones which made the experience so much more intimate. It wasn't long before we was joined by other hikers but everyone was respectful of each other and appreciative of the beautiful scenery.
These are my top rated waterfalls in Brecon Beacons! Let me know down below if you've been to any of these yourself, and if so, which one is your favourite? As always, if you visit any of the places mentioned in this blog please tag us on instagram (@bilbo.h) as we'd love to see your pictures!
