The Great Ocean Road (GOR) isn't all about the twelve apostles, for one, there's a gourmet ice cream and chocolate shop that's basically a factory and you can watch the chocolate being made and there's flavours for days and kangaroo statues that look like ice cream. Who wouldn't want to see that?
We spent two days along the GOR, we originally planned to head through to the Grampians but due to flooding and road closures we couldn't make it. This just meant we had more time on the GOR and it was totally worth it!
First stop
Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice creamery. It's a no brainer, the ice cream is amazing and the choice of chocolate flavours, shapes and styles is mind blowing. There's also a cafe for hot drinks and more substantial food.
Second stop
The GOR sign/memorial arch. It's got to be done! We snapped a quick pic as we drove up to it but there is roadside parking if you want to pull over and strike a pose under the sign. Just remember it can be quite a busy road so watch out for cars.
Third stop
Gibson stairs. A beautiful short walk (but quite a lot of stairs) to get down onto the beach and catch your first glimpse of the Twelve apostles.
Fourth stop
The twelve apostles! There's a large parking area with a information centre and toilets etc. The walk along the apostles is super easy and very pretty. This is the most popular spot on the GOR so just be prepared for lots of people.
Fifth stop
Loch Ard Gorge, Tom and Eva Lookout and The Razorback. All accessible from the one car park and all providing different views. The Tom and Eva lookout has a interesting story behind it, definitely worth a visit to learn about it!
Sixth stop
Thunder cave is one of the most impressive caves I have seen! The sheer force of the water is astonishing.
Seventh stop
London bridge, a sharp reminder of home from the name but quite a different view!
Eigth stop
The Grotto. My favourite stop on the GOR. We sat there for ages watching the waves crash through. It's absolutely stunning and mesmerizing and I cannot recommend this stop enough.
Ninth & Tenth stop
Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands are two smaller lookout points along the GOR. They both give a similar view of the coast but absolutely worth a stop.
