Is booking via a travel company the best way?

(1st and 3rd images are not mine)

For some people, travelling isn't their main priority in life. I know, strange, but it's true. My dad has never owned a passport and has never left the UK. For others, however, it is the main reason they get out of bed everyday, and for these people, planning their travels is just as fun as doing them. So, when it comes to planning them, are you a 'book everything through a company and let them sort it' traveller or are you a 'I got this' traveller?

Here are some of my views on booking via a company compared to doing it yourself.

The positives

-Less stress

For me, I find having a company sort out all my accommodation, activities and transport a lot less stressful! The one time I booked my own airport transfer in Australia the company didn't turn up and I sat in the airport for hours before having to fork out for a taxi...not ideal.

-Better deals on activities

The companies will be able to secure a much better deal on activities and accommodation due to long term custom and deals on group bookings.

-Can pay in advance and in installments

This one is a necessity for me, paying in monthly installments is much easier (financially and mentally) than paying for the trip in one large sum. Lot's of companies offer this option now and it makes a lot of sense to me to do it that way! When booking yourself, you'll have to pay in one go for flights, accommodation and activities which can feel very daunting.

-Support and help from the company and guides

Most companies will offer around the clock support when you book via them, before during and after your trip. Once in the country, the guides working for the company will be there to help with any queries and you can still contact the company if needed for advice.

-Local knowledge and helpful tips from guides

These people have worked and lived this life long enough to be full of knowledge about the area. They will be able to help you with future solo plans, tips of where to get the best food, the best beaches, the history of the place...all that kind of stuff!

The negatives

-Less freedom when planning

This one for me is not too much of a concern, I like having a structure and following an itinerary. Most companies do offer some free time in their itineraries but I know, for some people, this won't be enough! Having someone else book everything for you and tell you where you need to be and at what time can be frustrating for some people.

-Not picking your accommodation

I trust most companies to provide accommodation that suits the area and price range. Depending who you book with, they might not give you details about the accommodation, just that its a hostel or hotel and if its shared dorms or twin rooms etc. If you want to have control over the accommodation you stay in, book a tour with the company and not an entire package holiday. This way you can select your own accommodation.

-Group travel

Not really a negative for some people, but for others, this may not be their cup of tea! Look into how large the groups going on the tour will be before booking and make sure you're comfortable with it. If not, book your own private tours but expect a higher price!
