We've been budget travelling since September 2022. We've developed a lot of skills and money saving hacks but the best thing is finding free activities. Here's some of the free activities along Queenslands coast that we enjoyed on our road trip.
Rockhampton Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Absolute favourite FREE activity! This zoo is awesome. The enclosures are great, the species they have are varied and exciting and it's a really decent size. The zoo is located inside the botanical gardens so you can easily fill a day for free here.
Alexander Zoo
Another free zoo! A lot smaller but still some awesome species, a few I'd not seen before. Located in a small park there's a play area, picnic area and a walking track following the lake.
Brisbane Museum and Clock Tower tour
We love a museum. Such a good way to fill a day! Museums are sleeping with culture, art, history and fun educational activities. They're also air conditioned and have fun gift shops so what more do you want!?
Brisbane boasts a small free museum but the star of the show is definitely the clock tower tour. They run every 15 minutes from reception, completely free but you must book online due to limited space in the tower. You ride up the clock tower in the original 1920s lift and are rewarded with stunning city views. On the way back down you stop just behind the clock faces which is very, very cool!
Eungella National Park
My favourite national park we visited. Mainly for one reason...Platypus. Wild platypus. In the heart of Eungella is broken river, a quiet peaceful river with multiple viewing platforms along the bank where you can spends hours spotting wild Platypus and Turtles!
The national park also offers multiple jungle walks, waterfalls, swimming holes and mountain top lookouts.
Mackay Lagoon
After a certain point on the east coast you can't swim in the sea due to jellyfish, sharks and rays. It's also advised not to swim in lakes or streams due to crocodiles so a free lagoon is the perfect way to spend a hot day.
Mackay has a double story lagoon featuring a waterfall, kids area and waterslide.
Noosa Head coastal walk
If you can find parking for this walk I absolutely recommend it. The views are stunning and it's a nice easy level walk.
Tambourine Mountain
This area has lots on offer, multiple waterfalls and walking tracks for you to explore throughout the day. The best thing to do is stop off at the information centre and grab a booklet. In there it lists all the things to do in Tambourine.
Palmerston Highway waterfalls
This road is just inundated with waterfalls. If you stopped at every waterfall you'd be on this road for hours and hours! We did about 6 waterfalls and spent 4 hours on the road. My tip is to head to the furthest waterfall (we went to Milla Milla) and work your way back. Some waterfalls are right off the road, some you can swim in and some are big hikes through bush.
Yeppoon Lagoon
This is my favourite free lagoon we went to! There's free parking on the road (so you can avoid paying to park in the lagoon carpark) and it's the biggest swimming pool I've ever seen. It's also one of the deepest. We loved it here and spent 4 hours in the water.
